New Student Orientation

Overview

Orientation is a period of adjustment and initial exposure for new students at Stanford.  Special considerations should be taken with regard to use of alcohol and recruitment for student organizations during this time.  The following dates apply to New Student Orientation 2020:

Alcohol:

  • New Student Orientation (NSO) Period: Wednesday, September 9 to Sunday, September 13, 2020:  At no time should any Stanford student provide, serve or in any way make alcohol available to any new, incoming undergraduate student (frosh or transfer). This specifically means that no alcohol is to be present, served, or consumed at any student organization and/or dorm during NSO.

Events:

  • September 9 – 13, 2020 (Wednesday - Sunday).  Student organizations are not allowed to host events or parties for new students.

Recruiting and Tabling:

  • Wednesday, September 9, 2020. No student organization recruitment or tabling anywhere.
  • Thursday, September 10 – Sunday, September 13, 2020. No dorm or dining hall recruitment without specific permission from the residential staff (RF or RA). White Plaza tabling and in person gatherings are NOT permitted due to the pandemic.
  • Monday, September 14, 2020 and onward.  Student organization virtual recruitment is permitted, provided such activity meets University policies. White Plaza tabling and in person gatherings are NOT permitted due to the pandemic. Thursday, September 17 to Friday, September 18 from 10:00am - 6:00pm is the Virtual Student Activities Fair.

Recruiting Student Organization Members:

Student organizations are not permitted to recruit new members for their organization before the second day of New Student Orientation, Thursday, September 10 (eg added to listervs). No incoming undergraduate student should be offered organization membership or asked to represent a student organization until the conclusion of the New Student Orientation period, Monday, September 14, 2020.

General Advertising and Advertising:

Organizations wishing to conduct normal advertising and flyering may do so provided that they follow university policy for such activities.
