New Student Orientation

Overview

Orientation is a period of adjustment and initial exposure for new students at Stanford.  Special considerations should be taken with regard to use of alcohol and recruitment for student organizations during this time.  The following dates apply to New Student Orientation 2019:

Alcohol:

  • New Student Orientation (NSO) Period: Wednesday, September 18 until 8:00am on Monday, September 23, 2019:  At no time should any Stanford student provide, serve or in any way make alcohol available to any new, incoming undergraduate student (frosh or transfer). This specifically means that no alcohol is to be present, served, or consumed at any student organization and/or dorm during NSO.

Events:

  • September 18 – 22, 2019 (Wednesday - Sunday).  Student organizations are not allowed to host events or parties for new students.

Recruiting and Tabling:

  • September 18, 2019 (Wednesday). No student organization recruitment or tabling during Move-In Day anywhere.
  • September 19 – 23, 2019 (Friday - until Monday 8:00 am). No dorm or dining hall recruitment without specific permission from the residential staff (RF or RA). White Plaza tabling and recruitment is permitted. White Plaza is preferred location for such activities through September 22 (Sunday). 
  • September 23, 2019 (Monday after 8:00 am) and onward.  Student organization recruitment and tabling is permitted anywhere, provided such activity meets University policies and building expectations. Friday, September 27th from 12 noon – 4pm is the annual Fall Activities Fair in White Plaza.

Recruiting Student Organization Members:

Student organizations are not permitted to recruit new members for their organization before the second day of New Student Orientation, Thursday, September 19 (eg added to listervs). While recruitment in White Plaza is allowed beginning Thursday, Sepetember 19, no incoming undergraduate student should be offered organization membership or asked to represent a student organization until the conclusion of the New Student Orientation period, Monday, September 24, 2018 at 8:00 am.

General Advertising and Advertising:

Organizations wishing to conduct normal advertising and flyering may do so provided that they follow university policy for such activities.
