Local Autonomy

Student organizations may be affiliated with long-standing regional or national organizations. However, as Stanford student organizations, all decision-making control must reside locally. The university expects that registered Stanford students will lead all decision-making with the best interests of the university and its students in mind and be locally autonomous from outside influences. All currently recognized student organizations have been recognized by the university with the local autonomy policy in mind and University policy and guidelines take precedence.

Student organizations wishing to incorporate their own 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status cannot do so, except under rare circumstances.
